YOU GIVE LOVE A BAD NAME is Book 3 in Marilyn Brant’s Mirabelle Harbor series, but this story and all of the contemporary romances in this series can be enjoyed as stand-alone novels.
“Nothing but love, 24/7” is the slogan of Mirabelle Harbor’s only radio station, 102.5 “LOVE” FM. On the verge of turning thirty-five, local DJ Blake Michaelsen is well-known for several reasons his very sexy on-air voice, his omnipresent family, his eligible bachelor status, and his reputation as one of the most impulsive men in Chicago’s northern suburbs.
High-school French teacher and lifelong romantic Vicky Bernier is not at all wild about people who exhibit reckless conduct. (Blake.) Or men who have gigantic egos. (Blake.) Or grownups who still act like teenagers. (Blake, again.) She deals with enough adolescent behavior during the school day. Unfortunately, she’s the staff advisor to the Homecoming Committee, and they’ve chosen him as their DJ for the big fall dance.
What happens when a man whose job it is to play love songs for a living is forced to admit his deepest secret—that he doesn’t believe in true love—only to discover that the one woman who might capture his heart is the same woman who distrusts him the most?
No matter what you call it, with love there’s an exception to every rule. YOU GIVE LOVE A BAD NAME, a Mirabelle Harbor story.

Story Excerpt
One of the perks of working for a radio station was that it wasn’t a nine-to-five kind of job. There was some built-in variety.
So, after a long on-air rotation on Thursday, I was still technically on the clock when I arrived at Mirabelle Harbor High School around 315 p.m. and was greeted at the office by a chatty member of the Homecoming committee. Alexis something or other. She escorted me to the meeting location.
Whoa. And there was the French teacher babe, pacing in the middle of her classroom. Gotta love “community outreach” and the surprises it could bring. I had a fresh appreciation for the variety of my job. Spice. Of. Life.
I removed my baseball cap and slid off my sunglasses when the babe—Vicky—looked my way.
“Hey, there,” I said, extending my hand to her.
She looked at me suspiciously, like I might be holding a grenade or something. So I twisted my hand a bit, so she could see my open palm. Her smile seemed forced as she reached out to grasp it.
Small hands. Soft skin. So feminine. I reluctantly let go as she pulled away. She seemed a little off kilter, still staring strangely at me. I sent her my most charming smile.
She took a literal step back, cleared her throat, and said stiffly, “Hello, Mr. Michaelsen. I’m Vicky Bernier, staff advisor to the Homecoming committee.”
Very formal and controlled. Hmm, that was no fun. I wanted to throw her off balance again because she was cute when she was flustered and, hey, I was that kind of guy.
So I beamed an even bigger grin at her. “And you’re a friend of my sister’s,” I said, curious to see if that would disarm her or make her more concerned.
From the expression on her face, definitely the latter. Huh.
“Yes,” she said slowly. “I’ve heard a lot about you from Shar.”
Damn. What did my sister tell her to make her scowl at me like that? Couldn’t be good.
I turned my attention to the four teens in the classroom who were gaping at us like we were cast members on some reality TV dating show.
The chatty girl who’d met me at the office was the first to speak. “On behalf of the Homecoming committee, we’re all so glad you could meet with us today, Mr. Michaelsen. And we’re super psyched that you’ll be DJ’ing our dance.”
"Thanks for the warm welcome," I replied. "I promise we'll make this fun." But to myself I couldn't help but add, Whether or not your teacher wants it to be...

OK, the ..."Half agony, half hope" letter...is my favorite excerpt of all Jane Austen's writings. But Blake's tribute to Mademoiselle Vicky Bernier as the Homecoming Dance draws to a close has me in tears and sighing. Well done. This couple is only thrown together because the Homecoming Dance committee has voted to ask Blake to be the DJ for that dance…against this teacher's internal better judgment.
Getting to know Blake Michaelson was quite the experience….this man who is described as having a split personality by someone close to him. But to the public eye he is the quintessential playboy: handsome, sexy, with a deep enthralling voice but a love 'em and leave 'em pattern in his relationships. He doesn't believe in love even as the disk jockey for the local voice of love on the radio (LOVE FM). He scorns "romance" and even gets looks of warning from his boss when his sarcastic views of such begin to sneak into his broadcast persona. But then his love of family, his heartache when his parents die and his adoption of and relationship with a mutt puppy give us peeks into another side, a hidden side.
Then there is that French high school teacher, the romantic who is looking for “the one”, a lasting relationship but also has learned a lot about “looking before you leap” in her relationships. She likes to read JAFF books and all those historical romances I (we) like to read. And she does believe that there are those heroes out there. So in observing this drunk, crass, ready to leap-into-a brawl man, who is also the sister of her good friend she puts up all the barriers around her heart.
She calls him on all those lines, all those “chance” meetings around town and then when she calls him on his budding relationship with her, for some reason…he is angry, he is not at all happy…one night stands??? What? OK, now we have to talk.
I loved the back and forth points of view and the development into understanding these two very opposite personalities. And part of understanding Blake was in getting to know his family better. But we also get to see that there is more to the romantic Vicky as we learn what she knows about her students. Indeed, this also had me with blurry eyes. Young people can have issues that are hidden but just as serious as some of the adults around us.
I was captivated by this story and recommend it to all those other romantics out there. There is some brief MA content with a few “choice” words as any realistic modern story might be expected to contain. I look forward to more in this series as there are a few often mentioned characters who do not yet have their Happily Ever After endings.

You Give Love a Bad Name Mirabelle Harbor Book 3 eBook Marilyn Brant Reviews
Blake and Vicky have chemistry, but is it enough? Blake is known for his playboy ways. Vicky is a straight-laced teacher. But is she really? Or is what people see their ways to cloak who they really are? This book brought back so many memories for me, and the scenes felt so real. I felt like I was there. There were intense moments, funny moments, heartbreaking moments, and sweet moments. A wonderful book, and I highly recommend it.
Another winner by one of my fav authors. I love Marilyn's story telling. Her writing flows so sweetly from the beginning to the end.
This novel is a great stand alone story but it is wonderful hearing from other characters in the Mirabelle Harbor series.
Blake's character surprised me. My preconceived ideas of him were totally smashed. He is quite a hard nut to crack and very set in his ways until Vicky melts his tough exterior. Ultra cool chemistry bubbling beneath the surface. Love their fiery clashes!
The Michaelsons are a wonderfully close knit family and a joy to read and to get involved in their lives. This sums them up to a tee "Family ties had a tensile strength like platinum when it came to the Michaelson clan" love it!
I also love the references to Rochester and Heathcliff and how annoyed Blake was to be compared to a "drunk, foul-tempered douchbag" haha that was one of many fav quotes. But there were so many more!!
I adore Pride and Prejudice and it was so much fun seeing a little of my fav characters Darcy & Elizabeth in Blake and Vicky not least the realisation that they need to compromise a little to allow a love to blossom. "Sometimes first impressions are wrong" wonderful throw back to P&P love it!
I thoroughly enjoyed the song references and the French. That was so much fun!
The scenes with Winston are heart wrenching. The emotion portrayed just wonderful. It made me teary.
"So hot I could almost hear him sizzling" what a cracker of a line!
I can relate to Blake and Vicky on a personal level too. Reminds me much of my hubby and I in that Blake tries to play the tough guy but deep down a marshmallow. Me, I'm pretty straight laced with a bit of a wild streak haha!
Thoroughly enjoyable story and highly recommended.
Ps Marilyn don't forget to expand on the intergalactic story that sounds fab ;) x
